James Bond, Move Over for Secret Squirrel

Not too long after Rocky the Flying Squirrel disappeared from television airtime, a new squirrel appeared that answered to the moniker of Secret Squirrel. Secret Squirrel and his fez-wearing sidekick, Morocco Mole, faced many enemy agents determined to trip them up, just as Rocky and Bullwinkle were constantly harassed by the likes of Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale. Secret Squirrel and Morocco Mole fought other enemy agents with a vast array of spy gadgets, including a machine gun cane and a collection of guns. NBC introduced the sleuth squirrel with its The World of Atom Ant and Secret Squirrel as a primetime special in 1965.12 A year later, Secret Squirrel got his own show, and, as the cunning Agent 000, he took his orders from his secretive boss, Double-Q of the International Sneaky Service. Just like Agent 007 in the James Bond movies, Agent 000 had a number of archenemies, such as Yellow Pinkie (a parody of the Goldfinger villain out to eliminate the film hero James Bond).

Secret Squirrel does not have the suave demeanor or disarming wit of a seasoned master of espionage such as Agent 007. He typically enters the headquarters of the International Sneaky Service headquarters wondering what his next assignment might be when he meets with his agency chief. When he asks the chief how he should find the bad guy that he is instructed to capture, the chief tells him to look the bad guy up in the phone book. Secret Squirrel confesses that it’s this kind of wisdom that qualifies his boss to be chief, while he is a mere agent in the field.
